The Charge Rifle fires an energy beam that inflicts massive damage. Holding the trigger charges the weapon. Timing is critical to its use: this weapon will only fire when it reaches full charge, and it will discharge automatically as soon as it hits full charge.
— In-game description.

The Charge Rifle is a hitscan Anti-Titan Weapon introduced in Titanfall, and returns in Titanfall 2, Titanfall Online, Titanfall: Assault, Apex Legends and Apex Legends Mobile.

History[]

The Charge Rifle was made by Wonyeon Defense as a weapon to fight Titans. Since it was capable of reaching Titans from afar with its hitscan projectile and capable of dealing great damage when charged up from any range, this instantly became a necessity upon factions that took part in the Frontier War.

After the Frontier War, Wonyeon Defense made a new version of the Charge Rifle, usable only for legends partaking in the Apex Games. This iteration was not significantly different from its predecessor, although a pull on the trigger now made the weapon fire a beam before the hitscan projectile rather than charging up while holding the trigger. It was also modded to equip Sniper Scopes, as Anti-Titan Weapons were now redundant in a place where there were lack of any.

Design and performance[]

The Charge Rifle is a railgun compacted into a weapon that can be fired by pilots. It uses batteries that can be seen on the side of the weapon to charge itself, and is the only hitscan weapon in the Titanfall universe besides the Longbow (which later loses this perk after the Frontier War).

Field notes[]

  • Make sure to reposition/take cover after firing this weapon, as the laser beam can be seen by enemies and give away your position
  • Avoid leading as the hitscan nature of the weapon removes the need to do so.
  • (Titanfall 2) Aim for the red parts of any titan, as the Charge Rifle is the only Anti-Titan Weapon that allows for critical hits.
  • (Apex Legends) Carry 3 stacks of Sniper ammo when using this weapon, as it burns through ammo quicker than other Snipers

Strengths[]

  • Hitscan
  • Very far range compared to other weapons in its class
  • (Titanfall/Titanfall 2) Instant kill against any pilot
  • (Titanfall/Titanfall 2) Highest damage of any Anti-Titan Weapon
  • (Titanfall 2) Only Anti-Titan weapon capable of critical hits
  • (Apex Legends) No need to lead due to instant beam upon pulling the trigger
  • (Apex Legends) Beam slows down enemy targets
  • (Apex Legends) Sniper optics complement its hitscan beam
  • (Apex Legends) Simple way to level up your evo shield
  • (Apex Legends) Can deal the highest damage of any Sniper if a player hits a full beam on a target

Weaknesses[]

  • Slow rate of fire
  • (Titanfall/Titanfall 2) Takes about 2 seconds to fire
  • (Titanfall 2) limited ammo
  • (Apex Legends) Beam can give away your position
  • (Apex Legends) Poor hipfire accuracy
  • (Apex Legends) burns through ammunition quickly
  • (Apex Legends) Damage falloff at range
  • (Apex Legends) Cannot equip Extended Sniper Magazines

Titanfall[]

The Charge Rifle debuts in Titanfall as a hitscan anti-titan weapon. It one-shot kills any pilot and deals great damage to titans.

Titanfall Online[]

Like numerous other Titanfall-era weapons, the Charge Rifle was expected to return in the now-cancelled game Titanfall Online

Apex Legends[]

This portable beam cannon was originally designed to take down Titans in the field, so imagine what it can do to a human. The Charge Rifle’s signature orange beam starts charging on trigger - pull and fires automatically when fully charged. This unique firing cadence makes accuracy essential - a poorly aimed shot will leave the operator vulnerable to return fire. A shot that lands, however, can finish the fight before it starts.
— In-game description.

The Charge Rifle returns in Apex Legends. Not much has changed from its predecessors, although it no longer requires a player to hold the trigger down to begin firing. Instead, a trigger pull will make it deal small increments of damage to a target until about a second later when the weapon deals a larger burst of damage. It is no longer an Anti-Titan weapon, as the Apex Games (and Outlands in general) lack Titans. Instead, it has been converted into a Sniper Rifle that uses Sniper optics, Sniper ammo and Sniper stocks.

Trivia[]

  • In the first game, the Charge Rifle is stated to have 500 ammunition - in practice, however, the weapon has unlimited charge and will never run out of ammunition.
    • In Titanfall 2, the Charge Rifle is stated to have 0 ammunition - in practice, however, the weapon has 20 charges of ammunition. The Extra Ammo mod grants 5 extra charges.
  • The Charge Rifle operates similarly the Spartan Laser from the Halo Series. Both have a time period that they require to charge up, both fire as soon as they are fully charged, both have a visual indicator for their imminent attack (bright orange light for the Charge Rifle and a red laser sight for the Spartan Laser), and both deal massive damage, though the Spartan Laser is comparatively stronger and thusly requires slightly longer to charge up.
  • In Titanfall 2, the Japanese characters on the Charge Rifle's stock (タイタンフォール) translate to "Titanfall".
