Militia Assault Pilot

"We've got a friendly pilot coming through!"

"What's so special about them?"

"Trust me, they're on a whole 'nother level."

— IMC grunts regarding a Pilot

A Pilot is the operator of a Titan, possessing superior skills and equipment compared to the standard Grunt. Players take the role of Pilots in Titanfallfighting as an operative of either the IMC or the Frontier Militia.

They are far and wide considered the most effective and fearsome forces on the battle field, a status which is only augmented by their Tians.

Pilot Certification

Before becoming a Pilot, potential candidates must earn their Pilot Certification while undergoing Pilot Certification Training. Candidates cannot become Pilots and operate or establish neural links with Titans until they earn their Pilot Certifications in the simulator. The training is split into two parts, Pilot and Titan training.

The first half of Pilot Certification Training involves a series of simulated exercises involving multiple scenarios. The training is set up to test a candidates speed, endurance and fast reaction timing when faced with dangers or obstacles that the average soldier can't overcome without Pilot abilities or a Jump Kit. It also assesses a candidates combat skills, thoroughly going over weapons and grenade training while taking accuracy and bullet conservation into account. A candidate who manages to quickly complete certain free running courses, flawlessly complete the grenade training and pass the weapons training without reloading their rifle will have it noted in their final assessment. The final part of this training involves the candidate to use all the skills he or she learned to survive against a simulated superior force while being equipped with only a Smart Pistol, Cloak, and Frag Grenades along with their jumpkits.

Those who manage to survive move on to the second portion of the training, operating a Titan. Candidates learn how to summon and embark into a Titan as well as learning how to use certain Titan weapons and abilities. In particular, Candidates must learn how to utilize the Vortex Shield to absorb enemy projectiles and hurl them back at the enemy. They must also learn how to utilize both the Chaingun and Salvo Missiles, leading up to them learning about Core Abilities. Candidates are ultimately required to face a large number of enemy Titans and infantry, being tasked to survive as long as possible. Due to the final portion of the training being extremely difficult to complete, a majority of candidates are given their certifications even if they fail the final segment since they managed to meet all the previous requirements. The final portion is set up as more of a lesson than a requirement, since typically one Titan faced against many normally ends in the lone Titan's destruction as well as the Pilot's death. Those who manage to complete the final segment without dying are commended for their survival against overwhelming odds, many of whom become some of the deadliest Pilots to operate on the Frontier.

Overview

Operating a Titan

A Pilot, while in a Titan, can maneuver and fight similarly as if he or she is on foot, due to the Titan being designed to be an extension of the Pilot's body. This is, of course, with the exception of the ability to jump, which is instead replaced by the Dash function. Titan combat also has a few other differences compared to traditional infantry combat, such as a different set of weaponry and equipment.

If a Titan is at critical damage, a Pilot can also use an ejecting system to eject from a Titan before the Titan explodes. A Pilot can also manually initiate the eject sequence even though the Titan is still above critical damage levels.

A Titan can also be operated whilst the pilot is not actually in it. It has two modes that can be switched between while pilots are disembarked: Follow and Guard. Follow mode makes the Titan follow the player as close as the titan could possibly be. Guard mode will make the Titan defend the position it is at, useful for defending objectives or key locations on a map.

Combat on Foot

While outside of a Titan, Pilots are armed with a myriad of equipment. All Pilots wear body armor that can withstand a decent amount of gunfire. The body armor is also equipped with a jet pack, called a jump kit which allows Pilots to double jump, wall run and even hang from walls momentarily. Jump kits also protect Pilots from any possible injury from long falls. A skilled Pilot can make use of these abilities to chain multiple jumps and wall runs to cover great distances with speed and ease.

Pilots can take on multiple roles while on the battlefield, many of whom act as riflemen, support gunners, snipers, and even officers who can lead and command troops in the field. Unlike the average soldier, Pilots have access to a wide array of weaponry which varies from pistols, assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers and sniper rifles that they can fully customize to suit their preferences while on the battlefield. They also have access to weapons that are designed to inflict damage against enemy Titans in case their own Titans are unavailable.

Pilots can also damage a Titan using small arms, dealing a small amount of damage (unless an explosive or anti-vehicle weapon is used). Pilots can jump onto a hostile Titan (also known as a Rodeo attack), tear off a section of armor, and shoot into the internal systems of the Titan until it is critically damaged. Despite these abilities, Pilots can still be easily shot, stepped on, or even punched if they are not cautious around an enemy Titan. Pilots also need to be aware of retaliation by the hostile titan in case the enemy titan has Electric Smoke or Cluster Missile equipped and nearby enemies will not hesitate to kill you while partaking in a rodeo attack... they don't want you on one of their titans!

Pilots can also hitch a ride on a friendly Titan, preventing hostile Pilots from initiating a Rodeo attack on that allied Titan, and can also use the allied Titan as a springboard to reach higher areas. The friendly Titan's shield also protects the pilot from some fire and explosive damage, at the cost of becoming a visible target.

Ziplines can be found in many maps. Pilots can ride the ziplines by using advanced gloves to grab and ride down the zipline. By using the jump kit, Pilots can even travel uphill, and can use ziplines to traverse the map incredibly fast as well as gain access to hard-to-reach areas or the map. Ziplines are easy to spot in most maps and Pilots can be shot off the zipline. The good news is, the Pilot on the zipline can shoot back!

Simulacrum Pilots

Simulacrum pilots are robotic pilots that are based on the mind of a human pilot.

On the whole, they fight much like human pilots,in terms of mobility, accuracy and tactics, but they are capable of wielding different types of technology (I.e Stim and Phase Shift).

Ash is an example of such a pilot.

Trivia

  • IMC grunts have speculated that Pilots are actually next-generation Spectres, which have full skin over metal endoskeleton structures.
  • The reason CQB Pilots don't wear masks is to blend in with grunts, as they are stated to be Covert Ops and need to remain out of the line of fire.
  • The helmet of the male Assault IMC pilot is supposed to resemble Boba Fett's from Star Wars.
  • It is possible that all pilots are officers, due to most NPC pilots having said rank (I.e. James MacAllen) and their dominant presence on the battlefield.
  • It is possible that the breathing apparatus on the pilot's helmets give them greater endurance (unlimited sprint).
  • There are two types of Militia pilot Male Rifleman suits and two types of Militia Female CQB suits. The alternate Male Rifleman suit is shown below with a different helmet style. The Female CQB suit is identical to the original with a slight change to the face: the original has a tanned/dark-skinned look while the alternate has a much lighter Caucasian or "white" skin tone. There is also another version of the Female IMC CQB, in the same fashion as above. One is lighter skinned and the other is darker skinned. There appears to be no way to influence which of the two variants a player gets for any set, it is randomly chosen for the player when he/she first spawns in a match.
  • One grunt, who claims to have tried using a Jumpkit once, commented that they are "hell on your knees" and he understands why they take years of training to use.
  • There is a glitch that affects the female IMC Sharpshooter model in Titanfall 1, where their head wrappings will occasionally appear in the Militia color scheme, despite the rest of their armor being displayed as the IMC color scheme. This has no affect on gameplay.
